owl pellets on makoke trail

this was one of those moments where I knew God was chuckling at me. being the coordinator for our wild + free group here in central northearstern iowa, it’s my responsibility to plan our adventures and excursions! right next door to our property is a nature reserve full of camping, hunting and a few hiking trails, so it seemed perfect!

having never been, I trekked a trail earlier in the week in preparation for our group of littles to explore later that week. in doing so, I found a cute easy little “hike” if you even want to call it that. as more of a nature walk if you ask me! but PERFECT for little legs! the trail was called “The Makoke Trail”, so I dropped a pin on maps and planned the trip!

I wanted this endeavor to be a little more fun for the kids, so I found this SUPER cheap owl pellet kit on amazon that came with 10 pellets, 10 tweezers and 10 pokers for dissection, as well as an information guide on owls and a rodent and bird identification chart for all the bones! You can find the kit HERE

after ordering, I figured hmm.. I wonder what makoke means? … I cannot make this up.. but apparently makoke means “bird” or “owl” in the Ioway language! what are the odds I mean really!?

Needless to say, the adventure was awesome for the kids, despite the wet and cold rainy day!

This is a GREAT science project for really kids of any age, and relatively cheap as well. 🙂 enjoy your dissection and always find new ways to explore!
